Indie Author Spotlight Featuring J.L. Stray

GENRE: Contemporary Romance
About J.L. Stray

J.L. Stray has always enjoyed reading books and writing stories. Finally, she gathered up enough courage to publish one herself. A former Policy Specialist and current Consultant, she spends any extra moment she has writing, outlining, and scheming her next book.

Raised in a small town in Pennsylvania, she graduated from Penn State University with a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and Public Policy. Most days she uses one of those degrees in either her career or dealing with her children.

J.L. lives in that same small town, with her three very active children, who always have her at a diamond, field, or court. She is a lover of books, shoes, beaches, and a strong drink.

We asked J.L. Stray a some questions and here are her answers:

Q1: What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?

My latest book is No Longer Broken, the third and final book in the Broken Series. The main characters, Josh and Desiree were secondary characters in Books 1 &2 and ideas for their story continued to come to me while I was writing Mike and Danielle’s story.

Q2: What are five words that describe your writing process?

Pantser Chaotic Spotify Longhand Hopeful

Q3: What authors, or books have influenced you?

I really enjoy reading books by Tarryn Fisher, Colleen Hoover, K.A. Linde, Corrine Michaels, and Kandi Steiner.

Several of the books by these amazing authors, I have read and thought, “man I wish I had written that.” They have such a wonderful way with words, that I hope one day to have as well.

I have learned a lot from Colleen Hoover, she will answer writing questions on Instagram or talk about her writing process. It has really helped me learn a lot about the industry and develop a writing process for myself.

Q4: What is the first book to make you cry?

Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women was the first book to make me cry. I was just a teenager when I read it, but it’s a story that has stayed with me.

Q5: Is writing your full-time career? Or would you like it to be?

It is currently not, but I would really like it to be. I write whenever I get the chance; evenings after work, if I ever have a free weekend; which isn’t often. At my kid’s sports practices or between games during their tournaments.

Q6: What is the best advice you have ever heard?

Just Write. It’s simple but sometimes we just need that reminder to shut out all of the noise and doubt and let the words flow from your fingertips.

Q7: What is your favourite genre to read?

I love to read the same genre I write, Contemporary Romance. But sometimes I will throw a thriller in there.

Q8: Do you have any writing quirks?

I like to write the dialogue first. For me, the conversation always flows so freely in my head that I type rapidly to get it all out. Once it’s out and I’m happy with the flow of it, I go back in and add the little touches to it; the description, the actions, and any scene descriptions.

Q9: What are you working on now?

I’m currently writing Tis the Damn Season. It’s inspired by the Taylor Swift song. I heard the song a lot, my daughter loves Taylor Swift and plays her music nonstop, a story started forming in my head with each listen.

BLURB:

Danielle Moyer has been attracted to her supervisor, Mike Connelly, since the day she walked into the Philadelphia Probation and Parole. But there’s a rule: Subordinates cannot date supervisors. Mike Connelly never meant to cross the line with one of his staff, but there is something very inviting about Danielle and he can’t help himself. The two give in and find themselves navigating a very dicey office romance. With pasts that are riddled with things that have left them broken, making it an uneasy road.

Add in the rule: supervisors can’t date their subordinates and you’ve got a situation that could easily break in more ways than one.

Can they endure or will it leave them broken?
