We asked Kate a quick round of questions, and here are her answers:
Q1: If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
A: Compassionate, creative, and laid-back
Q2: Either Or :
Tea or coffee – Neither!
Hot or cold – Cold
Movie or book – Book!
Coke or Pepsi – If I had to choose, Coke. But really, I’m a Dr. Pepper girl.
Q3: Are you working on anything at the present you would like to share with your readers?
A: I have quite a few projects going right now! I’m working on the first book in my new Love & Liquor series. If you’ve read any of my published books and loved Holden Sterling…his story is coming soon!I’m also writing for two other authors’ Worlds. There’s a novella in the works for an anthology that’s part of the Authors in the Steel City event in Pittsburgh, PA next year (I’m a signing author). I’m also part of a multi-author series that will be releasing next summer.
Q4: Which are the five words you would like to be remembered by as a writer?
A: Ordinary life with extraordinary love.
Q5: Grab the nearest book, open it to page 22, and look for the second word in the first sentence. Now, write a line that starts with that word. (Please include the name of the book!)
A: Tell me there’s never been anybody but me…because I’ve never loved anyone else but you.
The page started in the middle of a sentence, so I used the second word of the first full sentence. The book is Bright Side by Kim Holden (one of my all-time favorites).
Q6: What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?
A: I’m supposed to have a schedule? (lol)I’ve never had any type of schedule or work time planned out. I probably should, but my life doesn’t work that way. I write whenever I can squeeze it into the time between everything else. Most of my writing is done late at night when my kids are in bed.
Q7: What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?
A: Okay, so I’m a huge procrastinator. It’s pretty bad. I’ll slowly write about half of a book over the course of a few weeks (or months), then I somehow end up writing the second half of the book in an extremely short time. For example, my last book took me three months to write. Half of it was written over about a month and a half. I wrote the second half, which was about 40k, in two and a half days.
Q8: Do you have a favourite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.
A: It’s hard to choose a favorite, but I’d have to say Presley Sterling. She’s the heroine from my latest release, Scintillation.Presley is this gorgeous girl, but she struggles with loving herself. She’s special because she’s me in most ways. I mean, I put a little of myself into most of my female characters, but Presley is close to my heart because we share many of the same struggles. I used a lot of my personal experiences and emotions in her character and her story.
Q9: Where do you draw inspiration from?
A: Inspiration is everywhere for me. Family, friends, music, other books…the list is never-ending. Several of my characters are based on real people. There are conversations in my books that happened in real life. I think that using real experiences makes my books feel more real.
Q10: When did you first consider yourself a writer?
A: I’ve been a writer since I learned how to write. I grew up writing everything I could think of. Stories, poems…in my diary. I’ve always had a love of writing (and reading). I got lost somewhere along the way and didn’t actively write for a long time, but I rediscovered that love a couple years ago and I couldn’t be happier.

Kate agreed to participate in a little flash fiction.
This is the cover of your next book, write the opening paragraph…

“Don’t look down,” I mutter to myself. Closing my eyes, I inhale deeply and force myself to ignore the shiver that courses through my body as I reach for the knotted ropes. Releasing a ragged breath, I open my eyes and take the first step forward. Ignoring the trembling in my legs, I tighten my grip, taking one more step. I refuse to let my fear stop me from crossing. Turning back is not an option. Not when everything I’ve ever wanted is on the other side, just beyond reach.

Supernova

Jackson Blackwood owned all my firsts…
Two years ago, I allowed tragedy to tear us apart. Overwhelmed by heartache and grief, I ran, leaving everyone I loved behind. Now I’m back, watching my past and present collide. Jaxson is a reminder of everything I lost and all the reasons I forced myself to move on. Even when my happily ever after turns to hell, I can’t go back. I can’t give him what he wants because there’s nothing left of me worth loving.
Madalyn Sterling is the other half of my soul.
If breaking my heart wasn’t bad enough, she came back and shattered the remaining pieces. My attempts to move on fail, leaving me worse off than I was before. Alcohol numbs the pain, turning me into someone I’m not. Madalyn may no longer be mine to love, but it’s impossible to let her go. Especially when I discover her devastating secret. She needs me now more than ever.
If we can forgive our mistakes and accept the past, we can turn our heartbreak into a second chance.
Supernova is the first book in the Stars Align series and can be read as a stand-alone.

Singularity

It was only supposed to be a one night stand.
I’m not the girl everyone thinks I am. I hide my insecurities and keep my secrets buried deep, but I’ve been pretending for so long that I barely recognize myself. Tired of the facade, I decide to reclaim what my past stole from me. Hooking up with the sexy stranger from my brother’s bar is reckless, but playing it safe has never done me any favors. One hot night of explosive chemistry leads to the last thing I ever expected. Two little pink lines.
The worst part? I don’t even know his name.
Moving to Blackwood was supposed to be a fresh start.
Life has a way of letting me down. I pack up and move to a new state to escape the bad memories. I’m not looking for romance, but a chance encounter with an undeniably gorgeous girl changes my priorities in a big way. We share a single incredible night together and I’m left wanting more.
The problem? Even in this small town…I can’t seem to find her.
When Camille Sterling and Ryan Alexander finally find each other, they get the surprise of their lives.
Singularity is book two in the Stars Align series and can be read as a standalone.

Scintillation

I’m the dark to my sisters’ light.
As a triplet, I often feel invisible, overshadowed. There’s a constant war inside my head, a little voice telling me that there’s nothing special about me. Yet, I yearn to be seen. Despite my anxiety and insecurities, I want to step out of the shadows. But I have a secret, and scars I never wanted anyone to see. With no other choice, I seek help from the one man I want but try to avoid. Adam Pierce is the only one who can hide my scars. He hates me, and I don’t know why.
I feel like I’m missing a piece of myself.
After learning the truth about my paternity, finding my family should be my first priority. But I’m too distracted by the one woman I shouldn’t want. Presley Sterling thinks no one sees her, but I do. She’s the only thing I can see and I hate it. I think she’s a spoiled princess who thinks she’s better than everyone. I don’t understand my attraction to her. She may be gorgeous, but beauty is only skin deep. The day she walks into my tattoo shop, I discover the truth. Uncovering her secrets changes everything I thought I knew.
There’s a thin line between love and hate, but somewhere along the way, the line between us blurs.
Scintillation is the third and final book in the Stars Align series and can be read as a standalone.
