We asked Victoria, aka Tori a quick round of Q&A’s, and here they are:

Q1: How do you come up with the titles of your books?

A: With some of my books, I have titles before I even start. I’ll be falling asleep and something will pop into my head and I’m like…YES! I must write a story about this! Other times, they just come naturally during the drafting process. For example, Blurred Lines. Ava, my main character, was writing a novel called Blurred Lines and it fit so well with the actual story that I titled it, you guessed it,…Blurred Lines.

Q2: How do you deal with the emotional impact of a book (on yourself) as you are writing the story?

A: I write about a lot of heavy subject matter. My first poetry book spun me into a very dark place because it was about the domestic abuse I went through in my first marriage. Writing about that was hard and I struggled a lot, internally, with my own mental health again just from writing about those moments. Therapy. Journaling. Coffee. My baby. They all help.

Q3: How many books have you written? Which is your favourite?

A: Oh lord. So…I suppose I have… Six novels and two poetry collections now. I think my favorite is by far, Blurred Lines. I, undoubtedly, put the most work into this book and it’s my favorite I’ve written to date.

Q4: Which of your books was the most enjoyable to write?

A: Sinners’ Retreat was fun. I mean, I was just hacking people off left and right but interweaving so many storylines into one big plot was intense and thrilling and just…super exciting.

Q5: What are the five words you would like to be remembered by as a writer?

A: Thought-provoking, Considerate, Compelling, Detailed, and Honest.

Q6: Do you write while listening to music? If so, what music inspired or accompanied your current book?

A: No! I can’t. I cannot have any noise when I’m writing. I find myself writing the words I’m hearing and that’s clearly not going to work. One of my books, Blurred Lines, has a playlist associated with it. The book is mocked up as an album and each of the chapters are “tracks.” But that’s Ava and River’s story and their music. Not anything to do with what I was doing as I wrote it.

Q7: Favourite book when you were a child?

A: Blueberries for Sal was one I checked out of my school library every single Thursday when I was in Kindergarten. I’m not sure what it was about it but I actually found it on Amazon and bought it for my daughter. I also loved the Nancy Drew books and R.L. Stein books.

Q8: What do you like to do when you are not writing?

A: What do I LIKE to do? Relax. Zone out. Hang with my baby and my husband… What do I do? Run the publishing company, promote other books, social media things. I feel like it’s never-ending. OH! I also have a podcast. A lot of research and time goes into that each week and I love it.

Q9: What is the best part of your day?

A: Morning snuggles with my baby (I know, I sound vomit-inducing now, I’m sorry). I also just love when I have nothing to do, which isn’t often, and I can just not think about anything.

Q10: What is your favourite spot to visit in your own country? And what makes it special to you?

A: It’s actually the river in the town over from mine. There’s something calming to me about being there, being by the water and just having a second to breathe.

Tori agreed to participate in a little flash fiction.

This is the cover of your next book, write the opening paragraph…

I didn’t think I would ever be the type of woman to be kidnapped. I’m smart. Intellectual. Intelligent. And, okay, a little cocky. I just never thought I’d be here. In this cottage in the woods, where no one can hear me scream, a thousand miles away from the people searching for me. I can feel his warm breath on my neck. I want to bat him away but I know what happens if I try and struggle. It only ends up hurting me in the end. God, if you can hear me, if there was ever a time that you listened to a prayer, please let it be now. I swear I believe in you. I know you’re real. I know you’re there. They say if there’s a God, there’s a Devil. So… You have to be out there somewhere. Because I’ve seen the Devil. He’s right behind me.
